Flooding in GTA Homes

Flooding in the GTA is common, especially for older homes and buildings. Not only can excessive flooding cause structural damage to your home, but it can also be a haven for harmful bacteria.

Common Sources of Flooding

We encounter many sources of flooding, each presenting a unique threat. Here are several common sources of flooding:

Excessive rainfall overflows sewers and results in sewage backup in your property

Soil fails to absorb run-off rainwater, causing it to flow over and penetrate through your foundation

Local drainage systems are not able to handle the amount of rain, causing surface water to overflow and flood your property

River water may rise and overflow beyond the normal river channel

Waterproofing Your Basement

There are a number of options available for homeowners to protect themselves from flooding. The city of Toronto offers a subsidy program for flood protection services that will assist you in being able to afford a solution to your flooding issues if eligible.

Backwater Valve

Backwater valves are devices that are installed in basements that assist to prevent sewage from backing up into the basement. When the main sewer line overflows, waste cannot leave your home sewage system which results in a backup. This valve prevents external waste from coming into your home.

Sump Pump

Sump pumps are devices designed to pump water out of your home. They sit in small pits that absorb water into your home, and the sump pump pumps the water right back out. As this pump requires power, it will require an alternate power source during power outages.
